Whilst she was last in Jamaica, photographer and stylist extraordinaire Savannah Baker was commissioned to produce VP Record’s Reggae Gold 2016 album package. As a one-woman powerhouse, she cast, creative directed, photographed, produced, and styled this piece. Of course with a little helping hand from her friends at Drapers. Reggae Gold is VP Record’s biggest seller – a compilation of the best reggae and dancehall jams of the year – and easily the most anticipated release of the season.
Popular for its “sexy gyal” aesthetic, Savannah wanted to take a different approach to this year’s cover. “I wanted to capture the true beauty of the country,” she says, “with a more empowering female approach, whilst of course keeping with the theme – a natural sex appeal nod with strong stances so the gyals totally own it.” She kept to her roots and injected some authentic vibes to pay homage to real Jamaican style, which has very often been appropriated by other cultures without giving proper respect to the island. We love everything about Savannah’s “ladies rule” interpretation and know you will too.
